A special honour for Wermekes’ Gold Cushion
The Museum Kolumba in Cologne has acquired an early work by Günter Wermekes: the ‘Gold Cushion’, which the designer designed and produced in 1988, has now been given special recognition. “I am overjoyed that this work has now found its place in one of the most significant collections in our state,” says Wermekes.
The Kolumba is the art museum of the Archdiocese of Cologne. 2000 years of western culture can be experienced in this museum which was founded in 1853. In its various works of art, ranging from the late antiquity to the present day. In the architecture which combines the war ruins of the late Gothic St. Kolumba church, the ‘Madonna in the Ruins’ chapel (1950), the unique archaeological excavations (1973-1976) and the new building based on the designs of Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.
Günter Wermekes created the gold cushion for the ‘Discover Gold’ design competition run by the Benson & Hedges company. It is made from beech wood with leaf gold and measures 20 x 150 x 150 mm in size.
